Can you believe it's almost 2013? Just a few hours and then the fireworks will light up the deep ink evening sky...

Fun Fun Fun at Xmas

We had an awesome Christmas together. Thinking about it makes me smile 24/7. You don't have to be with loads of people, eat a ton of food or end up burried under a massive pile of gifts to have the time of your life...

Yay, It's Christmas Day

Yes it's that special day again, Christmas day. So I put up the garland I bought this year. I like it's country feel and think it looks wonderful on the cabinet. It's cute don't you think?! I'm celebrating with my family today so...

Felt Cupcakes & Apple soup

I treated myself to a hot chocolate with a ginger cookie this morning. Mom helped me to carefully cut out a small piece of cookie. So that it would sit on the rim of the cup & look really pretty. Charlotte likes the look of it too...

Chanel at the Dylan hotel

One day last week my sister called me up & asked me to join her for a perfume workshop that would be held in Amsterdam. I had to let her know if I'd come straight away. She would have to pass that information on to the lady who organized it. I said yes, and so it was that last monday I traveled to my sister's house...

Christmas decorations

Ah Christmas, the pretty decorations. The smell of gingercake and cinnamon floating through the air. Getting cards and watching some sappy holiday movies. Being with family and celebrating together. It all just makes me so happy. One thing that has always been present during Christmas here at Pale Rose is the good old traditional tree...

A Fine Day

S. came to visit with me earlier this week and we had a wonderful day with lots of fun and baking. She came early in the morning, we started with tea and a chat & then made dinner for the four of us...

Dickens Night

I like to read Charles Dickens, his language & his ability to add emotion in surroundings aswell as characters appeal to me. Some of his books are better than others but I have many favorites. Like Our Mutual Friend or A Christmas Carol.
In the city where my sister lives they hold a Dickens Night every year...

St Nicholas Day & a Party

December fifth is St. Nicholas day. It used to be on December 6, but they changed it for some reason. I wish they had not done so, as it's now on the same day as the birthday of a very special lady...

Almost Advent & Mistletoe

This Sunday it's the first of advent and because we always celebrate that, mom made us a pretty table centerpiece of evergreen, blue candles and a bow. Strangely enough our cats Chloe and Charlotte are leaving it alone. I'm looking forward to lighting the first candle on Sunday evening...

Christmas card, a New project & Dumplings

I've been busy with fabric these last few days. A while ago I told you of my new project. I had it all planned out, I was going to make a quilt from the embroiderd cameo's my mom made in 1980. During her stay in America she made a lot of crafty things, including these gems. They are older then me J. mentioned & thinking of it that way it's a little strange, though very true...

Mustard scones & Autumn Quilt

A while ago there was this series on tv, the great Brittish food revival. About forgotten food that needs bringing back. Really nice show! On this one episode Ainsley Harriott baked mustard scones with caramelized onions in it. They looked pretty good and I wrote down the recipe, to try it sometime. Days past and then...

Lavender Lemonade & Surgery

We have a large lavender plant in our back garden that always flowers beautifully. This year was no exception. We picked the flowers and dried them earlier, so we could use them for all sorts of things, year round. It's always handy to have a pot full of dried lavender, ready for cooking. One thing I like to do with lavender is make a lavender lemonade...

Library Visit

I love going to the library & have many great memories related to it. I can even remember one of my early visits at the age of 6 (or maybe 7) years old. Grandma took me. "Her" library had a huge staircase I had to climb, but what treasures I could choose from to take home with me to read...

The bag in the picture above I got at my library once & I thought it was fun. It says: Good Books Are Good Friends. So true!

Cinnamon Swirls & Christmas baubles

I'm in search of a new cabinet for my room. I now have a small white one with open shelves. It's too small and not very practical in use. Hence I want a bigger one, with closed doors. To keep the dust & the kittens out. Yesterday we went to Ikea to look for one...

St Martins Day

Tomorrow, November 11 it's St. Martins day. Always a fun holiday when you are younger. I remember clearly ringing doorbells, singing songs and getting some candy from the neighbors. Before doing all that my sister and I would make our own lanterns from colorful paper. It was a really fun thing to do together. After our evening journey we would select a piece of candy to eat & save the rest up for later. Real treasures those were...

Homemade cleaner & a "stowaway"

We've been enjoying fresh orange juice again. Dad's spoiling us with a freshly sqeeuzed glass for breakfast. Really lovely color & the taste, delicious. But it gives a lot of waste in the form of empty skins. What to do with those...

Wedding Anniversary & New Years Cookies

My parents celebrated another year in their marriage. In honor of the anniversary I decided to bake something special. In the cookbook I was reading I found a recipe for New Years Cookies with poppyseeds and rosewater. It sounded yummy and I decided to make them as a surprise. It being a new year of marriage and all...

As you might know (from my previous post) we are not celebration Halloween here at Pale Rose. But if you are, I'm hoping you'll have a happy one! Don't eat too much pumpkin pie and enjoy every minute...

Pancakes & Growing from seed

Baking pancakes with Grandma was one of my favorite things to do as a child. I remember her small kitchen and her old gascooker. I can picture the teatowels with dolls on them saying: Love is... something something.

I remember her silver hair and warm smile. If it happened to be raining and there was sunshine at the same time, she used to say to me that witches where baking pancakes. Apparently those where the ideal weather surcumstances for them to be baking pancakes. I never questioned it or asked for more information on it. Grandma knew it was so & grandma was wise. We would be baking them too in her cosy kitchen. Though I can assure you that my sweet grandmother was not a witch nor am I.

Halloween pumpkins, Apples & Onions

Halloween is getting closer and in several shops I've seen loads of orange stuff, ghosts, spiders and the lot. In our home we do not celebrate this holiday but I do love pumpkins a great deal. Mom bought us two edible pumpkins and we got a sheet of stickers to go with it. So we could make a funny face on them. I got the job of sticking them on & here's the result, cute not?!

maandag 22 oktober 2012

I celebrated my birthday this weekend. Another year gone by, time flies for real. I remember the excitement you used to feel as a child when your birthday would come. Sleepless nights a week before. Now I don't feel like that at all. Perhaps because I already knew some of the presents I would get. I picked them out myself you see...

Rosemary milk, Socks & Sheep

My toes turned blue again, the weather is getting colder & if you spend a day indoors not doing much because your in pain... Well they can alter towards a rich purple I found. Cold toes are rather uncomfortable. Not a nice feeling at all and a wonderful way to warm up is sitting under a homemade quilt with a mug of steaming hot rosemary milk...

The macaron, a French confectionery that has become rather popular. I've heard of them before, thought about making them, even seen them in shops (expensive!) but I never tasted one until this weekend...

Quark pie & Movie night

Mom bought some millet flakes in a shop in Germany after finding a recipe for a quark pie that made us rather curious. I made the pie a few days ago and it was lovely. You turn the ingredients (shown in the picture below) into a fluffy almost souffle like pie without a crust. It wasn't overly sweet and so light that you could eat it almost in one go, which we did not as it was our dessert. But I would love to make it again some time and have saved the recipe...

Autumn table & Handmade Tote Bag

It's been October for a week now & it was more than time to make a little Autumn display in our livingroom. Over the years my mom made a whole lot of adorable felt flowerchildren. They all represent something from nature and are made from the patterns of Mieke Stender...

New Clothes & a Rain Cloud Quilt

I'm not a fan of shopping. Yes, I do like to rummage through a charity shop or a vintage store for hours. Secondhand bookshops are also great fun. But going to the city and shop in, shop out for hours is not something I enjoy doing & tend to avoid. So many people and different types of music clashing together... Not my cup of tea.

Pumpkins & White Bean Soup

Last year we bought a pretty white pumpkin at the local flowershop. When it's life came to an end we "burried" it in the back garden. To our wonderful suprise new life emerged from it this year in the shape of a pumpkin plant. It grew and grew & gave us many yellow flowers (see picture). After a while small pumkins started to form...

Bunting & Rose Tea

I adore bunting, if I see a line of brightly colored little flags hanging somewhere I cannot help but smile. Nothing says lets party like a room full of bunting, don't you think. (The wooden boxes shown in the picture are made by my great grandfather.)

Now, since I'm such a fan, I have made a line of bunting before. But when I got hold of a pretty seedhead stitch pattern I got inspired to make a new line featuring those embroidered seed heads...

Teapots & Seashells

Our teapot broke :(

It was sitting on the kitchen counter when Chloƫ jumped on it and knocked the teapot on the floor. The handle came off, so it could not be used any longer. We've had it for a long time. It was a pretty teapot with thin gold lines and bright blue cornflowers all over it (see picture above). But accidents happen and this was the perfect excuse to go shopping for a new one...

Kittens & Salads

I live here at Pale Rose Cottage with my mom and dad aswell as our two cats. They are a recent addition to our family. Born in the beginning of May they are now four months old, kittens really. They are 2 girls called Charlotte and ChloĆ«. One is white and the other a callico. Always getting into trouble. Cute not?! sleeping in their wicker basket, smiling even. Cats sleep an aweful lot and I have many adorable pictures of them curled up together...

Bargello Quilt

I am a quilter. It's something I'm a bit proud of too and I find myself mentioning it to people all the time... is that silly of me? I have been a quilter for some years and made a bunch of small different quilts. To hang on the walls of Pale Rose. My interest with quilting began when my mom made a small babyquilt out of my old baby clothes/fabrics. It was a wonderful result apart from the emotional value it held for both her and me & I was eager to try and make one myself.

Rose Bread

We have some gorgeous pink roses growing in our garden. And I was dying to try out some recipes using our very own rose petals. This last week I tried a new recipe I found online: Rose Petal Bread. I read the recipe and it seemed really good. So I got the ingredients out and made it straight away. No time like the present they say. It looked pretty and smelled/tasted great, if I may say so myself. We had it for lunch with some honey and I will definetly make it again some time soon.

Welcome to my blog

Hello there and welcome to Pale Rose Cottage. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Jo's Daughter and I'll be blogging with you from now on.

Every great diary starts with a confession and I don't think it should be otherwise regarding a blog. So here it goes:
