Old & New

Happy New Year!

Out with the old & in with the new, these words were spoken yesterday here at Pale Rose. Mom and I cleaned out our closets. We have put on every piece of clothing we own, decided what no longer fit us well. After losing 25 kilos together in weight that was a lot. Come January we will have to go shopping for new clothes. Most ladies enjoy this process, we do not. However it must be done, as we cannot go out the door wrapped in a quilt…

Christmas Pictures

Thinking about our Christmas here at Pale Rose Cottage.

Though I agree (in this case), with the saying that a picture can be worth a thousand words. I feel that I can do SO much better. By sharing with you lots of photos of our homemade fun...

Blossoming the Night Before

Only a few hours before it's Christmas, or maybe a bit more than a few hours. Who's counting, certainly not me. All right, all right it IS me that's counting the minutes untill we'll all be together here at Pale Rose Cottage :) Sitting beside our twinkling Birch tree, sipping tea & eating my homemade Christmas pudding...

Dinner, Planning & Going to market

I went for dinner to my friend S.'s house & when I stepped over the threshold with my plate of homemade candy, it felt as if I wasn't the only one who had arrived. Christmas had come too!!! She decorated her entire place with gorgeous things & though I was obviously happy to see her, had difficulty focusing on that ;) A gorgeous tree with pretty color coordinated decorations stood in the middle of her living room & it's twinkling lights created a magical atmosphere...

Jane Austen & Christmas

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that on December 16 you HAVE to celebrate Jane Austen's Birthday. Or you cannot call yourself a true Janeite...

Poinsettias & a fun B-day

Today it's National Poinsettia day, did you know that?

So I took a pretty picture of ours. In between the red leaves there is our Poinsettia flowerchild. My mom made this for us a while ago & we have it on display every December. Poinsettias are special to us & this one is too! A gift from our good friends in Groningen. This is the first year I've heard of it being a day dedicated to these beautiful plants & online I saw that it's celebrated since '02 ...

Unexpected Fun & Kindness

When you get an unexpected gift that makes you smile. A little something that you don't expect, that moment of surprise... It makes you feel really happy inside :) We got three of those things this week, that moved us and made us feel warm. Those small gestures of kindness can mean the world to you & even make you want to share it with the world ;)

Happy St. Nicholas Day

Celebrating today with my family, we are all going to be together here at Pale Rose & have a fabulous time. Looking forward to many cozy moments to treasure for a long time :) Yesterday we put our St Barbara branches on the nature table & I hope that they will do well and give us many flowers before Christmas...

First Advent Sunday

Yesterday my mom put on her coat, tied her shoelaces & grabbed a pair of scissors. She popped her head round the door and said to me: "I'll be in the garden for a while". Words were not necessary between us, as I immediately understood her purpose....

St. Nicholas Market, Crafts & Poetry

It's almost St. Nicholas day and lots of little ones are getting excited. Our Charlotte is too young to understand & her being a cat doesn't help either ;) She does enjoy playtime and has many fun toys to choose from. This week, mom realized that most of her bolls had gotten old. Time to grab a bit of wool and get creative...

High Tea Lunch

Some days are not memorable & others have a moment that will stand you by for a long time. There are many days in life you can call special, some more so than others. Today I had the most amazing day, I went out for lunch with my friend S. & I can tell you that it was a day to remember for a long time...

Knitting, Sewing, Painting & Freezing

It's incredibely chilly in our village, has been all week. We have the heating on, I'm wearing woolen sweaters & still my toes need wiggling to stop them going numb in 2 pairs of socks.
So now try to imagine turning the heat of, opening all the doors and windows. Letting the wind reign free. Sounds like a bad dream doesn't it? Well it was VERY real to us this week...

A Pancake "Prophesy" & a Laugh

Though all the ladies in my family, as far as I know, bake(d) pancakes on a rainy day. Non off us are/where witches & we don't dabble in magic. Yet there are times when you see something magical appear. Like a sign or a secret message perhaps, or simply something that will make you wonder...

The Gift of Friendship

When my Friend S. came to see me on my Birthday she told me that, in honor of me adding another year to my life, we'd go for a High Tea together. Then I got the flu and had to cancel our appointment :( Though I was sad it turned out this way, S. told me on the phone that she would come and visit me at home instead...

St Martin

Happy St Martins day !!

Reading the title or knowing that today it is November 11, I don't need to explain much about what we are celebrating at the cottage today ;) In this picture you can see the simple decoration we've placed on our nature table. It's a paper star light, a beautiful card framed and center stage on a slice of Birch tree trunk. Also a little "lantern" covered in stars. Perfect for St Martin who's the star of this feast...

Building Strength & a House

Some days make you feel awesome and some days not so much. Everyone at Pale Rose has been teary eyed, sniffling and rubbing red noses. More tissues please, became a familiar phrase at the cottage. Feeling our heads ache and stomachs harbor a storm, we needed to build our strength back up. Time for some good old tried, tested & terrific comfort food!

Miss Bennet's Barmbrack

Sitting on a chair in the living room of our charismatic country cottage. Sipping tea and watching a Keeping up Appearances rerun. I didn't feel like a Hyacinth at all. With a biscuit (or three) a complimenting my white tea & a scarf casually wrapped around my shoulders I felt a lot like a Janeite...

Getting into Halloween

October thirty first again, so allow me to wish you all a Happy Halloween!

Here at Pale Rose we are not big fans of all things spooky, scary or bloody. Still, I did make a little something to hang on the wall (or the blackboard to be precise). In honor of Halloween & our cat Charlotte really got into dressing up in costume !!! She's so cute...

About an Anniversary

Being married to your best friend is simply magical. Now, you know I'm not married myself & that hasn't changed since we last spoke ;) But my parents have been married for many years. Today they are celebrating being Mr & Mrs, as it's their anniversary...

A Soldier for my Birthday

Good Morning and Happy Birthday to me :D

I woke up early, as always and Charlotte was the first to greet me. Don't think she realized that I just added another year to my life. As I'm not a fan of Birthdays, or at least my own, that's perfectly ok with me. Presents are wonderful but unnecessary, we all know that the best gifts come from the heart anyway. This year however I got an amazing gift!!!  A soldier from Denmark, don't we make a cute couple?? ;) ...

Doctor I'm Smitten

"To brighten up our day we need a dash of Jane, wouldn't you say?" Those words I said to Mom this morning, when it was still chilly and I could tell the painkillers hadn't started to do their job. I always feel better after a dose of Jane. I get that dreamy nostalgic feeling of : oh how lovely it must have been back then. Though on second thought it is perhaps even lovelier to have proper heating & a television...

Sibling Sunday

Got out of bed early on Sunday and hit the shower before anyone else could claim it first. Dressed with care and applied some make-up. Looked at the clock a couple of times, but no matter how often you glance. Or how much you wish to push the arrows further along, time has its own pace. You can do nothing but accept it's rhythm...

Orange, Grey & Hooray

I often think it's strange how the sight of something can influence your mood, don't you? Think a puppy runing down the street. Or a child eating an ice cream that melts... Makes you smile doesn't it. The last couple of days it has been grey skies all around & loads of rain coming down. Many a moment, when glancing out the window, did I feel a little less than my cheerful self.

Like the weather changing in a blink, so my sadness drifted away by the sound of the doorbell. Wearing his bright coat, transforming the glass in Pale Rose's front door from light grey to sunshine yellow...

Stuck with a Bug & a Secret

Many artist have these periods or phases in which they are caught up with something. That can be a subject, or people and sometimes it's with color. I don't wish to claim that mom and me are artists, but we do have those type of phases. In which we are taken with something, experimenting and creating, trying to perfect it. Lately we have been stuck with a bug...

Catching up with Autumn

The garden has changed so much. From all shades of green, to bright reds, orange and yellow. When we walked round in it this week I noticed that Autumn arrived in every corner. It's probably my favorite season & inside our cottage we also surrounded ourselves with all things fall. Time to catch up...

Happy (almost) Animal Day

Ever since I was a little girl, I've been a BIG animal lover. I remember having a shelf full of stuffed animal toys. Books in which animals had wonderful adventures & loving nothing more than to watch animal documentaries on TV with Grandma. We've had many different pets over the years: Rabbits, Hamsters, Fish and a Guinea pig. A white canary and two amazing cats. Now we have our girls Charlotte + Chloë to share Pale Rose. With world animal day coming up tomorrow, I decided to provide a little treat already...

Happy Michaelmas

The sky can show you many things. Sadly I'm not really familiar with reading such signs. But I do recognize natural beauty when I see it with my own eyes. These stunning colors surrounded our cottage and I wondered if it was a sign, telling me that Michaelmas would become pretty special this year...

Cats in Bath

Pale Rose Cottage is blessed with two cats. Charlotte and Chloë bring so much joy to our lives. I read somewhere the saying that: Cats leave Footprints on your heart. That's definitely true for me, but they leave something else too...

Garden Harvest & Homemade Butter

We've had rain and we have had shine, all those combined created, what I suspect to be, the perfect growing conditions for all things green. Weeds proved their desire to grow in Pale Roses garden, but thankfully so did many more plants and some vegetables too...

Demeter & Joy

Whenever a season changes or the weather turns. When flowers bloom or are replaced by falling leaves. We cannot help ourselves and feel the itch to recreate nature on our nature table. The garden of our cottage is lovely, but sitting at the dining table or on the sofa, the windows only display a few trees. They are gorgeous and invite you to look outside, still. Having a miniature landscape with dolls and animals adds to the coziness that is our home...

Making a Floral Mess

Flowers are gorgeous, don't you think?! They come in every color of the Rainbow, in every shape or form & at any time of the year it seems. The ones in our cottage garden got good looks and they usually scent wonderfully. What a shame that they wilt so quickly and disappear long before I'm ready to let them out of my sight. Before I tire of looking at them...

Catching Butterflies & Seeking Dragons

There's been a couple of hot days here in the South of Holland. In fact on the one day we noticed/ experienced more than 30 degrees Celsius!

As we were driving back to Pale Rose from the village farm shop we positively melted. So immediately all of us had a glass of cold water to feel like ourselves again ;) With this much sunshine we could not remain indoors however. I spend some time in our beautiful back garden, catching Butterflies....

Challah & Covering up

My mom has always found it important to make food from scratch. I can remember her making fantastic stuff from as early an age as four, or maybe five years old. Like her birthday cakes, her Three kings bread and her massive piles of pancakes. As a child I found the celebration food she prepared the best & I guess I remember that the most as it was special to me. But she cooked great meals everyday and often baked fantastic breads aswell...

Flowers and Fritter Fun

Our girls Charlotte and Chloë are mischievious and inventive. Cats are just like people in many ways & always make me smile. Sometimes I get the impression that the cats themself laugh out loud. Like Charlotte in this picture above...

Cooking up a Storm

I love our kitchen, it's not pretty or fitting of our cottage in style. It's not luxurious or high tech in any way. It's small, it has no direct sunlight and there is very little room to make it cozy. Therefor I shall not add an overall picture, but like I said I love our kitchen. We spend so much quality time in there together as a family....

Saturday Sister Time

My sister came over for a visit last Saturday. After she got back from her vacation I had seen her briefly when she came for a cup of tea on the way. I had a quick show of her holiday snaps, but a few hours in the evening was not enough time for us to catch up. I was hoping to reconnect and so I asked her to come again soon. She did so on Saturday...

Lost in a Marathon

Before today I was not familiar with marathons. Like most people, I knew what a marathon was. But in "all my years" on this earth I had not partaken in one. That was about to change! My friend S. called me on the phone to make sure we both knew the time of our meeting. When the clock informed me it was a quarter to 10, I grabbed my stuff and closed the front door...

A Hundred (and 21)

I'm not a numbers girl, math isn't my thing. I like language, I like words. Creating an image or a story with letters is fun. Letters that when placed together in such a way, combine & become something more is even better. When I was younger I often dreamed of becoming a writer or a poet. I've written many diaries and letters, poems, comments on blogs. Also loads of things on my own blog. In fact today I am writing to you again and it's a special moment. Well, it is for me anyway: this is post nr. 100 ...

Banana soup, Kisses & Wishes

Chocolate, is there anything more delicious? I say there is and that's a cute chocolate tin. Look what I got from mom & dad. A fabulous Hershey tin that will look great in my room, besides my bed or reading chair. With a few biscuits in it or so. "Biscuits?" I hear you say...

Snapshots of a Sleepover

Haven't told you much about my sleepover beforehand at all, have I?! Must confess I did that on purpose. Yes I spilled all about the Brambly cake I made. Not so much where and with whom I was invited. There was no BIG secret & it is unlikely that you will be surprised to hear all. I just wanted to keep it to myself, for a little longer. Today I'll share it all with you & add a bunch of snapshots as well...

Taste of the Sea

I remember vividly going to the beach as a child with my family. The salty breeze in your hair and the grainy sand between your toes. Looking for seashells, building castles together & the sun making the sea look shiny and silver. Like a massive mirror reaching as far as your eyes could see...

Summer Nature Table & Felted Bowl

Summer is definitely here, the sun is out every day. You have to fan yourself, you drink liters of homemade lemonade & even though you are wearing a sundress and sandals, it's super hot at Pale Rose. Yesterday it was 34 degrees Celsius! Time to surround yourself with cool colors and sights of relaxation, don't you agree? I pulled out some things and created a summer nature table, to help us get that holiday feeling...

High T & A Busy Bee

Been short on time these last few days. Well, I've been busy I mean. Mom had to go to some doctor appointments and I saw my GP as well. We had to do some food shopping, cleaning & I went to the city to find some new summer clothes on sale.

Loads of things seemed to come together and I haven't done as much crafting as I would have loved. So many projects and so little time ;) I have made two tiny bees...
